Weekend camping by the bay:
Black & mild cigars, mosquitoes, cub scouts; tomato, cheddar, and pickle sandwiches; cowboy-style coffee; a boardwalk to nowhere, ending in the middle of the water, eerie and still.
Drove out to the Gulf the next day, passing through Port Aransas, with its white clapboard houses and palm trees. Fried shrimp and tartar sauce, Winton’s candy store, with its rattler sleeping behind glass, and homemade fudge, and salt-water taffy.
We swam in the ocean, and then drove home.
